Hi Debra,
I was hoping others would add to the list, as with your introduction of Pak Sheung-chuen, who is new to me. Your description of his piece is certainly in keeping with this post.

And as for your own drive to make art - I'm looking forward to seeing your work in person soon. I'm aiming to make it to your show at Blank Space later this week. Congratulations!

"...making something intrinsically positive" - yes! I couldn't agree more- as the drive that makes me need to make art. You have stated this so eloquently and supported it with inspiring visuals. You might also enjoy the work of Pak Sheung-chuen...he mixes a sense of humor into his conceptual pieces...i.e. in "Waiting for a Friend (Without an Appointment)" he stood in a specific place waiting for a friend (any friend). When a friend appeared and asked how Pak knew he'd be there, Pak told him, "I really didn't know...but I've been expecting you for a long time."

Sky,
Great posting! I agree with the comments above; refreshing and a timelessness to it. We all need a Sol Lewitt in our lives.

I will also admit to reading this this morning as I was waiting for my coffee to brew...and even though I noticed "Eva" was highlighted (I told myself it was probably a link to her website) I initially thought it was YOU giving a friend a public pep talk. As I read I was thinking, 'whoa, Sky...kickin' a--'

Thanks for the posting. It's a great way to start a day.

Hey Sky,
Thanks for reading my thing there.
I can definitely relate to your post. Sometimes I'd like to be a carpenter or something so I don't have to deal with the gamma rays shooting at me... ever. I like the New York Times guy and what he says about taking time looking at art. I've often thought that a cool movie today would be something like just a dude in a chair sitting there telling stories. I couldn't do it very well but it would be great in a generation where everything is overly dramatic and insanely exciting. But instead of web-chatting we should meet up in real time, sometime, grab a real meal or something. Ha...
Cheers

Coincidentally, The NY Times has an article today about the subway mural by Sol Lewitt being installed at 59th St/Columbus Circle. I got a peek at it two days ago!

Click here to view it: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/20/underground-not-quite-under-cover/

Thanks for visiting, Walt, and glad you could relate to this. I came across it years ago, and always find it as fresh as ever upon rereading. To me, it also speaks volumes about the value of having mentor-type relationships with artists who have been at it longer and have more experience. Likewise, it's good to reach out to younger artists, and share the benefit of what one has learned oneself. No matter how you look at it, to "quit fondling your ego" and just DO it, is clearly great advice.

Thanks for this post, Sky. Thanks for reminding me about those days when we artists faced the deadly and frightening AIDS crisis and fought for the right to be cared for. Thank you for reminding me of the power that we artists possess: the power to move people's hearts, to reach beyond words and prejudices and touch the humanity inside every one of us, the power to connect, and the power to channel anger and fear in powerful and constructive ways. Let's do it.
